DIT takes part in Presidential Trade Mission to Russia

The first ever visit by the President of Ireland to the Russian Federation took place at the beginning of September and was widely covered by media in both countries.

An integral part of the visit was the Enterprise Ireland Presidential Trade Mission to Russia and DIT took part, in line with our international regional focus. DIT has been active in recruiting students and developing links with universities in the Russian Federation for several years and the Mission provided an excellent opportunity to strengthen those links. The delegation attended a range of meetings with educational agents in Moscow and St Petersburg, furthering relations with universities in both cities.

To mark the historic visit by President McAleese, Education Ireland and the Embassy of Ireland in Moscow jointly organised an Education Roundtable to develop a dialogue between the Irish and Russian third level education sectors.

Professor Gerald Farrell, Head of School of Electronic and Communications Engineering and Marie O’Flynn, Head of Department of Finance, College of Business addressed representatives from over fifteen Russian higher educational institutes.

Mr Pat Maher - Enterprise Ireland, Professor Arkady Nekrasov Moscow Institute of Radio-Technics and Electronic Automation (MIREA), Minister for Trade and Commerce, Mr Billy Kelleher, Professor Gerald Farrell Head of School of Electronic and Communications Engineering DIT.

The School of Electronic and Communications Engineering and the Photonics Research Centre in DIT have been involved in research collaboration with the Moscow Institute for Radiotechnics, Electronics and Automation (MIREA) since 2005. During the Trade Mission, Professor Gerald Farrell signed a new agreement with MIREA to expand both research links in optical sensing and the number of personnel involved in several new areas of common interest for both MIREA and the DIT.

Marie O'Flynn, College of Business presents at FINEC

Following the visit to Moscow, President McAleese travelled to St. Petersburg where she delivered an address on "Legal Education and the Economics of the Future" at the St. Petersburg State University of Economics (FINEC). DIT was represented at this event also, having already developed links with FINEC last year when Marie O’Flynn, College of Business, visited the university. Ms O’Flynn made a presentation to an audience of academics and students on “Russian - Irish Cooperation in the Sphere of Higher Education'.”
